Our Non-Newtonian Fluid Adventure!
Our latest home science experiment ventured into the fascinating world of non-Newtonian fluids. We successfully mixed cornstarch and water to create a unique liquid that challenges conventional physics, and then put its unusual properties to the test with various impacts.
What We Learned
Behaves Like a Liquid (Slow Movements)
When moved slowly or poured gently, our fluid flows and drips just like ordinary water. It feels soft and gooey to the touch.
Behaves Like a Solid (Fast Impacts)
Apply a quick force, like a punch or a fast poke, and the fluid instantly stiffens, resisting the impact. It temporarily transforms into a solid-like substance.
The Science Behind It
The magic lies in the cornstarch particles. Under slow motion, they have enough time to move around each other. However, with a sudden, strong force, they are pushed together, momentarily interlocking and forming a rigid, solid-like structure that resists deformation. Once the force is removed, they relax back into their liquid state.
Practicing the Scientific Method
This experiment was a hands-on lesson in observation, hypothesis testing, and drawing conclusions – fundamental skills in scientific inquiry.
Real-World Applications
Non-Newtonian fluids are not just for fun! They're used in protective gear like liquid body armor, which remains flexible until impact, then hardens to absorb energy.

Storage Tips
Store your fluid in a tightly sealed jar. If it thickens or separates over time, just add a little water and stir it back to life!
